My Thoughts on Mosi DOT and the Complaints from Southern Artists
I understand the frustration of artists from the Southern Province who feel left out of one of the biggest music festivals in the country. The argument is that since the event is held in their region, there should be local representation on that stage.
I have been in the music industry for quite some time now. Even if I haven't yet reached my pinnacle, I have gained enough wisdom and experience—especially regarding the commercial and business side of the industry—to see the bigger picture. A musician is not just someone who makes music; they are a brand. This means they must have a team that markets them as a professional entity, not just as a singer or rapper. Furthermore, they need a PR team capable of negotiating deals with corporate entities. In short: the music industry involves politics and professional positioning.
It is not enough to go to social media and complain about being sidelined. Instead, it is about putting your house in order. You must brand yourself, build a dedicated team, and understand which stages are best suited for your specific brand.
The Mosi Day of Thunder (DOT) has been running for a long time. If you pay attention, you will notice the specific type of artists they book and the energy they want at their event. Does your music truly align with that stage? Or do you simply want to perform because you are a "son of the soil"? All of these factors must be taken into consideration.
While you are complaining, there is another artist out there busy building a small team and researching which stages they should target. Before you know it, you will be overtaken. Instead of venting, find a niche and build a brand so strong that corporates have no choice but to seek you out. There are many different stages you can perform on; stop putting yourself in a box. One of my favorites is Mumba Yachi—he has built his own stages and would never complain about being left out of Mosi DOT because his brand exists in its own space.
I come in peace.
