With design often being compared to art, one common question that has come up is whether or not design is subjective. Is good design just a matter of personal opinion? Well, no. At least not all the time.

Designers usually follow rules when they’re creating work. Why? Because good design follows a design process. It uses that design process to understand problems and create solutions, it isn’t random. Designers are allowed to break rules but ONLY if it helps the design meet its goal and solve a problem.

One question I always asked myself when I was first getting into design was “Am I creative enough?”. I thought of designers like artists that I saw on TV, that they would stare at a blank canvas for hours and just get inspiration to design something beautiful.

Now, I’ve learned that design isn’t really like art, there’s an overlap yes but good design has a process. It’s all about breaking down large complex problems into smaller solutions that you can piece together.
