Steelmaking faces growing pressure to decarbonise quickly and this is a matter we take seriously.
To become carbon neutral, we must transform the way we work. That’s why we're exploring how we can use hydrogen to reduce our carbon emissions.
✅ Back in 2023, we successfully became the first UK producer of pipelines for safe transportation and storage of hydrogen.
➡️ This year, we are testing how fuel-switching to hydrogen at our UK sites could decarbonise steel production and eliminate the use of fossil fuels.
With the collaboration of our Made with Hydrogen partners, we are working to ensure the longevity of British manufacturing, attracting investment and protecting vital jobs across the UK.

Last week, the LIBERTY Speciality Steels team had the pleasure of hosting Dr Marie Tidball, Member of Parliament for Pen*stone and Stocksbridge, at our Stocksbridge site.
During her visit, Marie met with Jeffrey Kabel, Chief Transformation Officer for LIBERTY Steel Group, Mick Hood, HR Director for LIBERTY Steel UK, Greg Clarke, Chief Operating Officer for LIBERTY Speciality Steels, and Neil Hanson, Head of Operations for LIBERTY Speciality Steels in Stocksbridge and Brinsworth.
Together, they discussed business updates, current challenges, and future plans. As part of the visit, Marie and her team also toured the Billet Mill and Advanced Machining Centre, where they had the opportunity to speak with employees.
Marie Tidball commented:
"As MP, I’ve been fighting for our Stocksbridge steel site since day one. It was fascinating to see first-hand how LIBERTY Speciality Steel transforms steel into a product with specialist properties that can be used across industries such as aerospace and industrial engineering, with capabilities to contribute key Government strategy, such as net zero."

LIBERTY Steel UK’s pipes division in Hartlepool has started production on a major contract to supply pipelines for a key new UK energy infrastructure project led by the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) and Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power). The contract, secured last year, marks a key milestone in the UK’s transition towards net zero emissions.
In total, LIBERTY will produce 105km of offshore pipeline infrastructure, which will be used to transport CO2 to the Endurance carbon capture storage facility in the North Sea, 1,000m below the seabed. As part of the preparations to successfully deliver this strategic project, LIBERTY Pipes Hartlepool has recruited over 30 new employees.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said:
“This contract is a perfect demonstration of our plan across Teesside, Darlington, and Hartlepool to use big international investment to secure good quality jobs for local people. Seeing LIBERTY Pipes start production on this major new contract is excellent, and cements our position as a runaway leader in these industries."
LIBERTY Steel Chief Transformation Officer Jeffrey Kabel said:
“This is a flagship project and hopefully one of many similar projects in the UK, and internationally, that the business hopes to be involved in. LIBERTY Pipes Hartlepool has an extensive track record in the North Sea and now, in line with our long-term strategy, we are pleased to extend our involvement in support of new Energy Transition infrastructure.”

The UK's manufacturing sector is the bedrock of our economy, a powerful driver of growth, innovation, energy transformation and vital skills development. The Industrial Strategy, coupled with the ambitious 10-year plan for steel, will set the course for a prosperous future.
These were the key takeaways from the Make UK National Manufacturing Conference, attended earlier this week by Jeff Kabel, LIBERTY Steel Group Chief Transformation Officer, Mick Hood, LIBERTY Steel UK HR Director and Head of Business Development Julian Schoch, alongside colleagues from GFG Alliance sister company ALVANCE Aluminium, James Tangney and Phil Bedford.
Jeff Kabel shared his insights: ‘It was encouraging to hear the industry's leading voices discussing concrete plans to address pressing challenges such as energy costs and tariffs. It's particularly positive to see the government's renewed commitment to the steel industry. Chancellor Rachel Reeves gave a speech updating attendees on the Industrial Strategy, reaffirming support for free trade, and outlining the government’s vision for economic growth and focused skills development. The clear emphasis on innovation and investment in manufacturing was a welcome sign."
Such forums and discussions foster a strong sense of optimism. The LIBERTY Steel UK team is eager to play a key role in revitalising the UK steel industry, driving the energy transition, and working closely with Steel Council partners.
