Energy is quickly becoming one of the most decisive factors in project viability across Africa.
For a long time, power was treated as a background utility. Today, it is a core strategic input , influencing margins, scalability, and ultimately, investment decisions.
Solar and clean energy are no longer being driven by narrative alone. The economics are beginning to stand on their own. Declining technology costs, combined with persistent grid instability and rising diesel expenses, are forcing a shift in how serious operators think about energy.
In sectors such as mining, construction, and industrial processing, the implications are significant. Energy is one of the largest cost components, and any structural improvement in how it is sourced and managed directly impacts project bankability.
Looking ahead over the next three to five years, there is a strong case that hybrid energy solutions will become the standard. Solar integrated with storage and conventional backup is likely to redefine how operations are powered, particularly in off-grid or weak-grid environments. Projects that embed energy solutions at the design stage, rather than as an afterthought, will have a clear advantage when it comes to attracting capital.
This presents a compelling opportunity for EPC players and investors who are prepared to move early and structure solutions that align technical delivery with long-term commercial outcomes.
At the same time, there are still practical considerations that cannot be ignored. Upfront capital requirements remain a barrier for many operators. Storage technology, while improving, still raises questions at scale. Regulatory frameworks in several markets are evolving, but not always at the pace required to unlock full deployment.
This raises an important question.
Is the current momentum behind clean energy being driven by strong fundamentals, or are we still in a transition phase where ex*****on risk is underpriced?
From a commercial standpoint, the opportunity is clear, but so is the need for disciplined structuring, credible partners, and realistic deployment models.
There is significant room for collaboration between project developers, EPC contractors, and capital providers who understand both the technical and financial dynamics of energy integration.
I am interested to engage with EPC firms and investors who are actively deploying or financing solar and hybrid energy solutions, particularly within mining and industrial applications.
