Helping business solve traditional problems with today's technology

28/11/2023

I've led teams of over 150 across 17 countries.

My secret sauce?

Challenging the status quo.

We didn't:

→ Assume innovation is a spontaneous occurrence.
→ Hesitate to disrupt routine for superior solutions.
→ Wait for trends to dictate our digital strategy.
→ Settle when excellence is achievable.

Instead:

→ Insisted Upskilling as a non-negotiable.
→ Pushed for tech adoption that made us pioneers
→ Digital fluency became our team's collective language.
→ Promoted the thrill of innovation and the rewards it brings.

Sticking to the safe route can keep a team busy, sure.
But sooner or later, they'll crave more—

↳ more challenges,
↳ more meaning,
↳ more impact.

CEO: This digital transformation plan seems overcomplicated.

CIO: What part do you find complex?

CEO: Just the entire scope feels overwhelming.

CIO: I understand your concern, but may I explain why this complexity is necessary?

CEO: Please.

CIO: Our growth needs to evolve with technology, right?

CEO: Absolutely, It's central to our strategy.

CIO: And technology is reshaping our operations, agreed?

CEO: Yes, that's evident.

CIO: This plan, though elaborate, is designed to simplify our future. Is that a perspective you can consider?

CEO: That’s an interesting way to put it.

CIO: In my world, technology is relentless. But in the boardroom, I must translate that pace into strategic milestones. We're aligned on this?

CEO: Agreed, there's a balance to be struck.

CIO: As I depend on you to guide me in aligning with our business vision, you rely on my IT expertise. Is that a fair statement?

CEO: More than fair.

CIO: It's about keeping us competitive, not complicating things. Does this make sense?

(The CFO, silently observing, nods)

CEO: Yes, I see your point.

CIO: It’s not random tech. We’re building a digital ecosystem aligned with our vision. Misalignments must be addressed together.

CEO: And how do you propose we do that?

CIO: By linking each initiative to business outcomes. It's about streamlining, not complicating. I need to translate our digital goals into business results you can measure. Agree?

CEO: (nods)

CIO: My proposal: walkthrough each step, aligning with our goals.
If the outcomes don't match our targets, we adjust, or you call me out.

CEO: (raises an eyebrow)

CIO: If the business doesn't adapt or invest in necessary areas, we must talk again. Because digital transformation is a two-way street.

CEO: (no longer raising an eyebrow)

CIO: It’s your company, your vision. We’re in this together, and I need your support as much as you need my expertise. Let's draft a roadmap with this understanding, shall we?

CEO: I think we're beginning to speak the same language.

CIO: So, do we proceed with the plan?

CEO: Provided our dialogue continues like this.

The exchange above illustrates a fundamental truth in business dynamics:

"Good Leaders Ask Great Questions" - 𝘑𝘰𝘩𝘯 𝘊 𝘔𝘢𝘹𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭

It is the art of negotiation!

Successful CEOs aren’t technophobes;
↳ they are visionaries who understand the power of technology.

And effective CIOs don’t just talk tech;
↳ they translate it into business value.

Leadership hinges on dialogue, understanding, and a joint approach to change.
↳ When both sides of the boardroom table talk, the whole company advances.

"Engage in dialogue and champion transformation."

If this sparked a new idea or perspective, pass it on.♻️
