Our congratulations to H.E Dr. Sultan Al Jaber on being appointed President of the upcoming COP 28.

To those who don't live in UAE, appointing the head of the UAE's national oil company to lead COP 28 may seem like the ultimate "capture" of the COP process by the oil and gas industry. But that view couldn't be more wrong.

Dr. Sultan has been deeply involved with the sustainability agenda for over 15 years. He was instrumental in setting up Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) and was its CEO for 7 years, during which time Masdar co-funded the London Array Limited (175 wind turbines which power more than a half-million homes in the United Kingdom and keep nearly 1 million tonnes of carbon-dioxide emissions out of the environment every year). The company also built Masdar City, a shining example (with many lessons learned) of low carbon construction and low carbon city-scale operations, and invested in wind projects in Dudgeon, Seychelles, Scotland, Samoa, Serbia, Jordan, Oman, Montenegro, Poland, Uzbekistan, Texas, and New Mexico in the USA. When he took over at ADNOC Group, he quickly set a carbon reduction objective, and in January 2020 committed ADNOC to decrease its GHG intensity by 25 percent by 2030.

Although some will argue we should "Just Stop Oil", the practical reality is that our global economy depends on fossil fuels. Knowing that we need to migrate away from fossil fuels, and simultaneously being able to use today's petro-dollars to fund tomorrow's renewable and sustainable sources of energy, is just the smart move.

Cynics may well disagree, but I am encouraged and hopeful in the news of Dr. Sultan leading COP 28. The UAE is going to surprise everyone this year.

ADNOC CARBON SAVINGS CERTIFICATE

It is always a great pleasure to visit ADNOC Group Logistics & Services at their operating centre in Abu Dhabi. Captain Mohamed Al Ali (centre) receiving their latest carbon saving certificate generated by their continuing use of Neutral Fuels biodiesel in their onshore and maritime assets. ‘With all feedstock collected within Abu Dhabi, refined in the Neutral Fuels Abu Dhabi refinery and supplied to one of Abu Dhabi’s leading companies, this is a true representation of ‘In Country Value’, said Mr Hatem Al Amoudi (left). Gary Hubbard FCILT (right) added, ‘ADNOC L&S are fully driving the sustainability agenda across multiple business units within the Group and we look forward to continuing to support their strategy for many years to come’.
