Let's have our second lesson about pronunciation.

Teachers teach (S) ending sounds in classes.
Today, we will look at three different sounds of (s) ending.

Note: The (S) ending has the following three pronunciation or sound depending on the last sounds of word:

RULES
1. After some voicelss consonant sounds (s) is pronounced as /s/ sound.

Voiceless consonant sounds
/f/, /k/, /p/, /h/, /t/
e.g. Stop, stops
Kite, kites
Walk, walks
Laugh, laughs
Pipe, pipes

2. After some voiced consonant sounds (s) is pronounced as /z/ sound.

Voiced consonant sounds;
/b/, /d/, /g/, /m/, /r/, /n/ etc.
e.g. Dog, dogs
Plan, plans
Kid, kids
Bulb, bulbs
Star, stars
Come, comes
Kill, kills
Note: After vowel sounds (s) is pronounced as /z/.
e.g. Go, goes
Play, plays

3. After /s/, /z/, /SH/, /CH/, /j/, /ZH/ sounds if we have (s) ending, we pronounce /iz/ extra syllable.

e.g. Pass, passes
Wash, washes
Watch, watches
Garage, garages
Judge, judges

Note: (S) ending refers to s, es, ies, ves, 's at the end of a word.

If a word ends with /t/, and the next word starts with /j/ or letter /y/, we produce /ch/ sound.
e.g. You play cricket, don't you?
Note: In the above example, the word don't ends with /t/ sound, and the next word starts with /j/ sound or letter /y/, so we produce /ch/ sound.
e.g. They want you.
