Today, BTC enthusiasts around the world celebrate Pizza Day — and it truly is an important date in Bitcoin history. 16 years ago, on May 22, 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz made the first known real-world purchase using Bitcoin: he paid 10,000 BTC for two Papa John’s pizzas.

At the time, that amount was worth around $41, and the transaction itself seemed like a simple experiment. Today, however, 10,000 BTC would be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, which is why Bitcoin Pizza Day has become a true legend in the crypto industry.

But the meaning of this day is not only about the “most expensive pizza in history.” Transactions like this proved that Bitcoin could be used as real money, not just as a digital experiment for enthusiasts.

Since then, Bitcoin has evolved from an obscure technology into a global financial asset discussed by governments, banks, and the world’s largest companies.

And yes every year on May 22, the crypto community around the world remembers those two pizzas.
