AICP ADDRESSES PROTOCOL IN FORMAL AND FAMILY CONTEXTS

The initiative “Academic Windows – The Academy Open to the World”, promoted by the International Academy of Ceremonial and Protocol (AICP), took place on April 25, 2026, featuring a session dedicated to the theme “Protocol on the battlefield: spaces, greeting lines, and family photos.”

The meeting featured presentations by academics Javier Carnicer and José Luis Angoy, recognized experts in the field of protocol and institutional communication. The session also included comments from academics Manuel Innocencio de Lacerda Santos and Jorge Román Morey, who contributed to deepening the reflection on the topic.

The event was chaired by Eliane Ubillús, President of AICP, who led the proceedings and emphasized the importance of the initiative in fostering knowledge sharing and promoting best practices in protocol.

The event recorded signif**ant participation from academics and professionals from various countries, with particular emphasis on the presence of Angolan participants, members of the Association of Ceremonial and Protocol Professionals of Angola (APCPA). According to the President of APCPA, Hildeth Coimbra, this fact highlights Angola’s growing involvement in international dynamics related to the study and practice of protocol.

The session was broadcast live via YouTube LIVE, on the aicpoficial channel, allowing participation from a broad international audience.

As part of the “Academic Windows” series, the initiative aims to promote knowledge exchange and the discussion of relevant topics in the academic and professional fields, reinforcing the role of the academy as a space open to the world.

The visit of His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV, has been a unique opportunity to observe, first-hand, the beauty, rigor, and symbolism of protocol, both at the state and ecclesiastical levels.

For this reason, it would be desirable that, at the end of the journey, professionals in the field might reflect on its protocol aspects and, if possible, commit their impressions of such an important event to writing.

I recall that, at the last International Conference of the Association of Ceremonial and Protocol Professionals of Angola (APCPA), our colleague José Saraiva, former Deputy Director of the Presidential Ceremonial, delivered a presentation dedicated to the visit of Pope John Paul II to Angola, analyzing its ceremonial and protocol aspects. In this context, it seems evident that we now have yet another relevant element that may serve as a basis for future contributions.

During the Holy Father’s visit, the Pope’s Mass in Kilamba will also take place, in addition to, according to the programme, visits to the Sanctuary of Muxima and to Saurimo. These are moments of great signif**ance, marked by the full expression of ecclesiastical protocol. It is therefore important to follow them with due attention.

Angola is, these days, at the center of global attention. The world is watching us and observing how Angolans are managing the papal visit from the standpoint of protocol, security, and the media.

It is this triangle that essentially defines a successful event. Therefore, we extend a word of encouragement and recognition to all those involved in organizing this major occasion, especially to our fellow ceremonial and protocol professionals.

We stand together.
