The Apollo 11 Moon landing was a historic event that marked the first time humans set foot on the lunar surface. Here's a description of the momentous occasion:
July 20, 1969
NASA's Apollo 11 spacecraft, carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, and Michael Collins, entered into lunar orbit.
After conducting a final check, Armstrong and Aldrin suited up in their spacesuits and climbed into the Eagle lunar module.
At 20:17 UTC, the Eagle landed on the Moon's surface in the Sea of Tranquility.
Armstrong radioed back to Mission Control on Earth, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."
First Steps:
At 02:56 UTC on July 21, Armstrong made history by becoming the first person to set foot on the Moon.
He famously declared, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Aldrin joined Armstrong on the surface shortly afterwards.
The two astronauts spent about two and a half hours on the Moon's surface, collecting samples and conducting experiments.
Return to Earth:
After completing their moonwalk, Armstrong and Aldrin returned to the Eagle and lifted off from the Moon at 23:54 UTC on July 21.
The spacecraft successfully rendezvoused with Collins in the Command Module Columbia, and the astronauts began their journey back to Earth.
On July 24, the Apollo 11 spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, bringing an end to the historic mission.
The Apollo 11 Moon landing marked a monumental achievement in space exploration and paved the way for future human spaceflight missions.
