Room Tone explores the relationships between acoustic phenomena – sound, speech, frequencies, vibrations – and somatic and nervous states. Conceived as an exercise, the exhibition unfolds throughout a defunct gym deep beneath the Funkhaus, playing on the myriad connotations of the word tone: from musical pitch to vocal modulation and the general character of a situation, to the contraction of muscles at rest, or the level of activity in a nerve fiber. The outcome of a one-month residency at NeverAtHome, Room Tone is the first iteration of The New Neurasthetics, an ongoing curatorial research project examining the contemporary resurgence of the nervous system as a cultural and somatic paradigm.

Taking as its point of departure Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann’s 1955 radio play The Cicadas, the work engages with sound, memory, and the collective longing for forms of transgression and disappearance.

During a summer residency in 2025 with NeverAtHome, Lutzky and Bierich gathered a group of twenty participants of different ages and backgrounds to collaborate through a series of conversations, sonic exercises, and performative interactions. Participants were invited to describe and imitate sounds, distorting personal memories through playful instructions that gradually displaced language into gesture, rhythm, and abstraction.

The workshop brings together actors from the artistic and creative field in order to collaboratively identify practice-oriented needs and develop empowering spaces for action. What kinds of infrastructures, tools, and concepts are needed for collective work today? Today, users primarily operate as passive end-users, excluded from processes of design, decision-making, and agency. Against this backdrop, the workshop opens with a theoretical introduction and overview of ownership, platform economies, and industrial data extraction. Building on this foundation, the workshop aims to collaboratively develop alternative approaches to non-commercial digital environments and sustainable cultures of use.
