The tour includes a viewing of the newly restored ceiling paintings above the grand staircase on the Volksgarten side, seen from the staircase itself, a presentation of the original “Klimt Cartoons” - preparatory sketches displayed in the Angelika Prokopp Foyer - as well as access to the ceiling paintings above the grand staircase on the Landtmann side, viewed directly from the scaffolding.

Ad| After so many years of living in Vienna, I only just discovered something extraordinary hidden inside the Burgtheater: Gustav Klimt’s only known self-portrait.

High above the grand staircase, in the ceiling painting Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Klimt painted himself among the spectators watching Romeo and Juliet performed before Queen Elizabeth I. Beside him are his brother Ernst Klimt and Franz Matsch - the three young artists immortalizing themselves inside one of Vienna’s most iconic buildings.

What makes the story even more fascinating is that the original preparatory drawings for these monumental ceiling paintings were rediscovered almost 100 years later, hidden away in the attic of the Burgtheater.

And yes, you can actually see it yourself.

If you attend a performance at the , arrive a little earlier or explore during the interval. The self-portrait is located above the magnificent Feststiege (grand staircase) on the Volksgarten side of the building.

💡The most extraordinary part to me: visit the Angelika Prokopp Foyer, where the original Klimt drawings are displayed and see Gustav Klimt self portrait as a young man with your own eyes.
