The tragedy in Ggaba, Kampala was everywhere in the news this week. Yesterday, four toddlers were brutally murdered at a daycare center in Kampala, shaking families, caregivers, and communities across Uganda.

We are deeply saddened by what happened in Ggaba.

A place that should have offered safety, care, and protection became the site of unimaginable violence. Our thoughts are with the children, their families, the caregivers, and everyone carrying this grief.

Moments like this remind us that education is not only about access. It is also about safety. It is also about trust. And it is also about the responsibility to create spaces where children are truly protected.

In development work, we often speak about classrooms, school materials, enrolment, and opportunity. All of that matters. But none of it matters enough if children are not safe.

Child protection is not a side issue. It is not something to think about later. It must be part of how we build, support, and strengthen every space for children.

Children need more than access.
They need safety.
They need protection.
They need adults and systems worthy of their trust.

Education begins where a child is safe.
