Before we imagined machines, we imagined ourselves as part of nature. Entangled asks: Can AI be woven into this web — serving not just humans, but all species and the planet?
We spent an incredible day filming with Dr Olaf as he set up a hydrophone off Terrigal, NSW to listen in on humpback whales. Huge thanks to Harriet & Woody Spark of Grumpy Turtle Films for capturing stunning underwater footage.
At season’s end, the hydrophone will be retrieved to reveal how climate change is reshaping whale migration — insights that help protect vulnerable marine life.

What if AI could help create a future where people, planet, and all species thrive together?
Our new documentary Entangled dives beneath the ocean and into wild forests to explore this question with scientists, key thinkers & everyday Australians.
Case Studies:
Marine scientist Dr Olaf Meynecke teams up with citizen scientists + Google AI to track humpback whales & reveal how climate change + noise pollution affect them.
Wilderness Society's 'Watch on Nature' project use satellite imagery to expose illegal deforestation and advocate for deforestation-free futures.
Guided by filmmaker & researcher Jeni Lee (with producer Bianca Vallentine & consultant Sarah Pink), Entangled asks how we might weave AI into the web of life — for the good of all species.

Could the rise of AI nurture, rather than exploit, the living world?
Our first Entangled shoot with Dr Olaf took us to Yuin Country, Batemans Bay.
As Olaf set up his hydrophone, a curious Leatherjacket swam in for a closer look 🐟.
Olaf uses underwater microphones to track humpback whales, uncovering how they’re affected by climate change and noise pollution — vital insights for protecting ocean life.
Huge thanks to Tammy & Mick from Beneath The Bay for the boat trip, and Johann & Hayley for their stunning underwater filming!

I am on the hunt for engaging examples to film in 360 degrees that will make the lifecycle of AI more transparent. Each will be the point of view of someone in a different environment eg. Mining lithium, programming software, training AI models off shore, managing e-waste, running data centres or working as a Mechanical Turk.
If you know of anyone who works in some stage of the lifecycle of AI, that you believe would be a good fit with this project, please ask them to message me! Thanks
