George Cooley’s exhibition ‘Picture Perfect: Painted Country’ is now showing at Hugo Michell Gallery.

The landscapes north of Coober Pedy are the subjects of Cooley’s paintings, particularly the Kaṉku -Breakaways, a geological formation that dramatically rises from the surrounding opal fields. The name Coober Pedy is an anglicisation of Parnkalla and Kokatha words kupa (ghost) and piti (a bowl to carry water or quarry), together meaning ‘white man in a hole’–a turn of phrase that reflects Coober Pedy’s status today as the opal capital of the world.

Ildiko’s Kovacs’ exhibition ‘Edging Form’ is currently showing at Hugo Michell Gallery.

Alive with energy and movement, the surface of Kovacs’ works are known for their sensual flowing line played against passages of consummate mark-making. Washes of underpainting reveal themselves from beneath layers of colour, while Kovacs’ elegant and bold lines dictate the movement of our gaze across the picture plane.
