One in six Australians suffer from back problems, many of which go on to become a leading cause of disability worldwide. To help improve early management of patients with this common condition, the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care has released the first national Clinical Care Standard. This standard outlines optimal care for patients with an acute episode, recurrence or exacerbation of chronic low back pain, and advocates a shift towards active approaches to support people with low back pain. The goal is to improve patient-centred care, while reducing investigations and treatments that may be ineffective or unnecessary.
