Learning a few words from local Indigenous languages can help build trust, strengthen relationships, and improve communication in clinical settings.
Using Indigenous language respectfully demonstrates cultural awareness, shows respect for patients, and contributes to more inclusive, culturally safe healthcare.
Always remember that each Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nation has its own unique language, dialects, and terminology. Before using Indigenous words or phrases, seek guidance from local Elders or the relevant Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community organisations to ensure they are used accurately and respectfully.
