“American sanctions from 1971 to 2021…murdered 38 million people.” Speaking at an event at the University of Chicago Graham School, political scientist John Mearsheimer criticised US foreign policy and cited a report by The Lancet that says US sanctions have killed 38 million people worldwide. Mearsheimer argued that the US uses “tremendous economic leverage” to impose sanctions that intentionally cause suffering and hardship, aiming to incite uprisings against governments in targeted countries. He said that is what is being done in places like Venezuela, Cuba and Iran most recently. According to the report by The Lancet, unilateral sanctions imposed by the US and EU since 1970 are associated with 38 million deaths. In some years during the 1990s, more than a million people were killed. In 2021, the most recent year for which data is available, sanctions resulted in over 800,000 deaths
