Loved, loved, loved spending time with my ‘long-time’ friend, , catching up with Scott Whitmont after many years, and meeting new friends. Louise is the inspiration behind Inspirational Saturdays - a small gathering of like-minded people to learn, laugh and collect titles of books for our to-be-read lists. Yesterday, Scott shared a subject close to his heart - Jewish Collectors, N**i Art Theft and the Quest for Justice. The sheer scale of theft is almost incomprehensible, and 80 years later, some valuable artworks are still being located. (For a ‘truth-is-stranger-than-fiction moment, check out this clip from just a few weeks ago https://bit.ly/46tSuGk) I also had the privilege of meeting and hearing from Catherine du Peloux Menagé, the Artistic Director of the Sydney BAD Crime Festival. Despite the overwhelming popularity of crime fiction in Australia, it’s astonishing that some circles still don’t regard it as ‘real’ literature. Thanks, Louise, Scott and Catherine and new friends for a day of stimulating discussion and a reminder of how little I know about the world. Xx
