National Disability Discrimination Commissioner Rosemary Kayess is calling on the Australian Government to fully address concerns raised by the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights (PJCHR) about proposed changes to the NDIS Act and make public its response. She said:

‘The NDIS was designed to allow people with disability to live independently and participate fully in the community – to give them support to make choices and have control over their lives. The proposed amendments risk these supports and the full inclusion of people with disability in society.'

The Commission, in partnership with Diversity Council Australia, has today released a new report that explores how ageism affects workers at different stages of life. It draws on the lived experiences of more than 3,000 workers across Australia.

We found that both older and younger workers face high rates of harassment, exclusion and discrimination, and call on employers to remove age-based barriers and take a life-stage approach to workplace inclusion.

‘Ageism – whether against younger or older workers – is so deeply normalised many simply accept it as the status quo. It is woven into the fabric of workplace culture, and people are rarely empowered to call it out,’ said Age Discrimination Commissioner Robert Fitzgerald AM.
