Restoring History: A Black Japan Masterclass in Frankston South

Some projects are standard, and others are true transformations. This 70-year-old Tasmanian Oak floor in Frankston South definitely belongs in the second category.

Walking into the home, we were greeted by rare, beautiful Tassie Oak boards measuring up to 5 metres long—a testament to old-growth timber that you just can't source in modern plantation-driven markets. Unfortunately, decades of clumsy 60s and 70s renovations had left the floor patched with mismatched pine and particleboard.

We cut out the old mistakes, repaired the layout with proper Tasmanian Oak, and prepared the surface with a superfine sand. The client envisioned a bold, dramatic look, so we coated the floor in full-strength Black Japan stain. It looks spectacular and had the added benefit of completely masking the heavy watermarks and pet stains left behind by the home's history.

Sealed with a highly durable Handley Lo-Sheen polyurethane finish, this floor is now a sleek, modern showstopper built to withstand the next 70 years.

The funniest thing about staining a floor, is that everyone has their way of doing it and, of course, they think their way is best..... Lisa and I are the same. We look at what everyone else is doing and go "That looks good, but our way is better"
It's all part of the flooring game.

The most important consideration is that the customer gets a kick-arse job, that's the most important aspect of the whole thing.
