WHERE ANCIENT CIVILIZATION MEETS QUEENSLANDS FUTURE
Art has no borders. Culture has no passport. And some conversations carry the weight of history.
It was a privilege for Honorary Consul General of Greece in Queensland, Mr George Mastrocostas, to accompany His Excellency Ambassador Stavros Venizelos as they met with Ms Celia Reordan, Executive Director of Arts Queensland, and Ms Renai Grace, CEO of Queensland Museum, for a discussion that felt as significant as it was inspiring.
Greece’s contribution to art, architecture, theatre, and philosophy is not merely historical. It is living, breathing, and deeply woven into the very fabric of Western civilisation. To explore how those threads might be drawn even more richly into Queensland’s cultural landscape was a conversation that left all parties energised.
And there is something extraordinary in the works.
Plans are underway to bring a landmark exhibition of ancient artefacts from Olympia itself to Brisbane ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. This will be only the second time in history that such artefacts have left Ancient Olympia, and the intention is for this to be far greater in scale and significance than the first. The opportunity to have these treasures in Brisbane as the world gathers for the Games is nothing short of breathtaking.
Mr George Mastrocostas is working closely with Associate Professor David Pritchard, the Queensland Museum, and both the Greek and Australian governments to turn this vision into reality. It is the kind of project that reminds us all why diplomacy, culture, and community matter so deeply.
Brisbane, the world is coming. And so is Olympia!
