From a compact Queenslander cottage to a flexible, light-filled family home - Black Betty House is a testament to thoughtful design on a small lot.

Rather than raising the original home, we introduced a two story rear extension, creating a versatile parents retreat above and open plan living below. The original cottage rooms were reimagined: a front playroom became a two person office, and the main bedroom transformed into a multi-purpose space for the kids. A feature blackbutt timber screen provides privacy and warmth, while large sliding doors connect the living area to the lush rear garden. The contrasting black upper level extension against the white cottage facade inspired the name - Black Betty House.

From a century-old Queenslander last renovated in the 1970s to a cohesive, light-filled family home, Black Ribbon House embodies the seamless blend of heritage and modern design.

By raising the original structure, the living spaces were expanded without compromising the backyard. The natural rear slope was leveraged to create a stepped lower level, achieving soaring 4.2m ceilings in the living area. A striking wall of glass now frames views of the landscaped garden and pool.

Finishing the week on a high with a construction update from our Wolvi client. This project is taking a little longer than most, but for all the right reasons — lovingly built and managed by the client themselves. Living onsite and building around their lifestyle, they’re creating something special. It’s been a joy for Allison at Studio 15B to help shape the vision behind the scenes.
