R is for READING 📚

Early reading ignites creativity, sparks curiosity, and stimulates the imagination in young children. Often, this leads to role-play as children grow which helps to develop other skills such as empathy, problem-solving, and morality.

Spending time together while reading aloud helps to create strong parent-child bonds and promotes healthy brain development. Children that are read to tend to have improved language and listening skills, experience stronger emotional connections to their loved ones, and gain a lifelong love of reading.

Reading with children is an opportunity to support children to make meaning from texts, and to learn “how texts work”. Children can also “rehearse” their emergent literacy skills, for example concepts of print, phonological awareness and making meaning, through the supportive scaffolding from educators.
