In Bulakan, brackish flood water has long turned rice fields barren. Farmers who once lived off their land now ride tricycles to neighbouring towns, working other people’s fields just to survive. Their own harvests are only memories, with drowned paddies and lifeless trees standing as reminders of what once grew there. Livestock cling to higher ground, tied to rickety wooden fences. Inside homes, residents keep raising their appliances higher and higher, improvising ways to stay ahead of the water. Now, the disheartening reality of flooding is back in the headlines. Not because seawater is creeping further inland, but because billions meant for flood control vanished into pockets. The water keeps rising. The people keep adjusting. And the cycle of loss, whether from flooding or corruption, remains the same.
