The SMSF Association has pushed back against calls for additional restrictions on SMSFs following the Senate inquiry into capital gains tax and negative gearing reforms.

CEO Peter Burgess argued that the real issue is not SMSFs themselves, but the conflicted, inappropriate, and often unlicensed advice that can lead consumers into unsuitable property investments.

The message is clear: target the misconduct, not the retirement savings structure. Effective reform should focus on those exploiting consumers, rather than restricting how Australians manage their superannuation.
