This National Reconciliation Week, we're reflecting on the importance of connection, respect, and learning from culture—values that are embedded into everyday life at St Nicks. 💙

Aboriginal learning is not something we explore only during significant weeks like National Reconciliation Week, but is meaningfully woven throughout our pedagogy year-round through the 8 Ways of Learning framework.

Recently, the children explored Aboriginal culture through storytelling, symbols, and art inspired by the book We Are Australians by Duncan Smith. Together, they learnt how Aboriginal people have shared stories and knowledge through symbols for thousands of years.

The children carefully observed different symbols and patterns, sharing their own ideas about what they could represent before creating their own symbols on rocks and bark using Posca pens. Their creations were then placed in our Belonging Tree pot as a special way to honour their learning. 🌱

We're also incredibly grateful to continue welcoming Duncan and Jakida from Wiradjuri Echoes Consultancy each month, who've been sharing Aboriginal dance, music, storytelling, and culture with our children for nearly 10 years. 🪃

These experiences support children in developing a deeper appreciation for culture, community, and connection—not only during National Reconciliation Week, but all year round.

"Learning and teaching should not stand on opposite banks and just watch the river flow by; instead, they should embark together on a journey down the water. Through an active, reciprocal exchange, teaching can strengthen learning and how to learn." – Loris Malaguzzi

Gardening is a valuable activity, aligning with the EYLF framework. Through getting hands-on in our berry and veggie patches, the children can learn patience, responsibility, and more. 🪴

As part of our extracurricular activities, gardening classes occur every Tuesday and Thursday at Hellenica. 🌱
