The Hidden Cost of Our “Burbling” Stress Response
Most people think stress comes from doing too much.
In reality, much of today’s stress comes from how our nervous system is being quietly held in a constant state of activation—even when nothing urgent is happening.
I often describe this as a burbling stress response.
Not full fight-or-flight.
But not genuine rest either.
Modern life keeps our nervous system gently simmering:
• Always anticipating
• Always monitoring
• Always mentally “on”
Over time, this creates allostatic load—the cumulative wear and tear that occurs when stress responses are repeatedly activated without adequate recovery.
What’s critical to understand is this:
👉 Much of this load isn’t driven by real danger — it’s driven by mindset.
The nervous system responds not just to events, but to how we:
• Interpret pressure & the world
• Relate to time
• Judge ourselves
• Mentally live in the future
When mindset is shaped by urgency, self-pressure, and constant mental doing, the body receives an ongoing signal that something isn’t quite right.
And so… it stays switched on.
Managing mindset isn’t about “positive thinking” or avoiding stress.
It’s about reducing unnecessary activation.
When we learn to regulate attention, interpretation, and internal pressure, the nervous system:
• Stands down more often
• Recovers more efficiently
• Regains flexibility
A busy life doesn’t have to be biologically expensive.
Reducing allostatic load isn’t about doing less — it’s about thinking and responding differently.
