Part 2 | From the Garage
Not every chapter of a business story is about growth.
There was a time when Smartfix was growing quickly and, from the outside, things looked successful. But behind the scenes, the business was under serious pressure.
By the end of the financial year, Smartfix had recorded a loss of around $2.2 million. It was one of the toughest periods in the company’s history and forced some difficult decisions.
That experience changed everything. The focus shifted from growing bigger to building a stronger, more sustainable business for both customers and the team.
Most people only see the end result. They don’t see the challenges and lessons along the way.
This is From the Garage. Follow along for Part 3.
Ever started a “simple” job at home and realised it was anything but?
We asked plumber Owen one thing he wishes more Perth homeowners knew, and his answer was simple. Older homes can hide bigger problems behind small fixes.
In this week’s Ask a Tradie, Owen explains why jobs like changing a garden tap can quickly uncover hidden plumbing issues, and why plumbing and electrical work should always be left to licensed tradespeople.
Save this for later or send us a message if you need help from our licensed team.

At Smartfix, team culture is about more than the work we do on site.
As a WA family-owned business, we believe in looking after our customers, supporting our community, and showing up for causes that matter. That’s why our team was proud to get involved in this year’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser for the Cancer Council.
It was a great chance to come together, share a few laughs, and raise $130 in gold coin donations for an important cause.
A big thank you to everyone who supported the fundraiser. We’re proud to be part of the Perth community.

Men's Mental Health Month runs all through June, and it's a fair reason to slow down and talk about something the trades don't talk about enough.
We sat down with Jevyn from Mens Talk on the Hypotential podcast to get into what's really going on for blokes on the tools. The pressure, the long days, the habit of saying you're fine when you're not.
This one matters to us. The people behind our vans at Smartfix are husbands, dads, mates and sons, and looking out for each other shouldn't wait for a bad week.
Mens Talk is an Australian not-for-profit organisation dedicated to breaking the stigma surrounding men's mental health. Through conversations, education and community support, they encourage men to prioritise their mental wellbeing and build healthier habits, helping create a future where talking about mental health is normal. Give them a follow at Mens Talk AU and have a listen to the full chat with Jevyn.
