Despite the recent showers, things are certainly drying up very quickly & we’ve already had a sample of what’s ahead for the fire season

Have you carried out your fire season preparations?

Stay safe this fire season & lets not be complacent; here are some simple things you can do now before the heat really hits

• Remove leaf litter from the roof gutters & valleys
• Check your irrigation systems, pumps and hoses are in good working order
• Remove waste piles from around the home eg: piles of sticks & leaves
• Brush cut overgrown grasses / shrubs around the home
• Ensure the lawns are mowed
• On rural properties make sure the is clear access for emergency vehicles
• Have a fire plan in place for each member of the family including pets & livestock
• Even if there is no fire at your property, be prepared for heavy smoke and protect family members with respiratory problems

As promised, here is the creation of what will be a very productive vegetable garden

Started with some raised beds filled using the Hügelkultur method, starting with some 20mm quincan for drainage, logs and mulch for bulk fill. Followed by a mix of unwashed sand and 10mm quincan and finally 300mm of premium garden mix

Planted out with a selection of seasonal veggies and mulched with sugar cane

I reset the stepping pavers and dressed the walkways with 20mm red quincan

That time of year here on the tablelands to plant out those veggie gardens.

As I’m certainly no guru, I kicked off a few weeks back and am trying a bit of R & D in the garden

We’ve all heard about companion planting, but does it actually work?
Well, instead of planting all like vegetables in rows like last year, I’m mixing them about and throwing herbs & other beneficial’s in amongst them to test this theory.
Another change this year is the type of mulch used.
Last year I used tea tree mulch and didn’t have too many issues with insects until late in the season.
This year I have used sugar cane mulch and already have signs of caterpillars and other chewing insects attacking my seedlings
Tomorrow I’ll be trying another old school formula of milk & molasses and see if I can curb these nasties before they take hold (last year was garlic & chilli spray)

Now the rain has subsided, it’s a great time to get outside and enjoy the garden, so hopefully this may inspire you

See the links below for information on Milk & Molasses sprays
I’ve also added a seasonal planting guide to help you out
