From Mid Kent Dyslexia

The decisions we make in the classroom should be based on evidence and science, not on an ‘idea’ about how to teach reading.
Our children’s futures are too important!

English is roughly based on 44 sounds or phonemes.
A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in a word. For example, the word ‘cat’ has three phonemes: /k/ /a/ and /t/.
These phonemes are represented by 26 letters of the alphabet which are used and reused in different combinations.
It is easier to learn to read using these 44 phonemes (sounds) than to try and memorise 1000s of words.
Memorising whole words is what I was doing before I found out I was dyslexic.
This strategy might work for a little bit, but once you get into higher grades, it is impossible to keep up with the volume of words that need to be learnt in order to read fluently.
That is why many reading challenges become obvious around the 3rd and 4th grade, when this ‘taking snapshots of words’ approach fails to keep working.
Only when reading is taught using evidence-based, structured programs underpinned by the science or reading, will EVERY child learn to read.

🎯🎯Training teachers in the science of reading will be our greatest weapon in ensuring EVERY child is taught to read!
