'Heavy blow' for criminals as more than 200 underworld figures charged after app sting 09/06/2021

Even the mob needs cyber security!

In the news today is a good bit of police work which has demonstrated two things:

1. Modern, nuanced policing is far more effective than the cries of talkback radio … “you never seen any police when you need them”

2. Mark Twain remains relevant … “it's not what you don't know that kills you, it's what you know for sure that ain't true"

Central to this story is that the police developed an ostensibly secure messaging app called AN0M and seeded it within organised crime gangs who took to it with gusto (all the time with the police watching).

It's fair to say that this was a critical app for the operation of their organisation. It’s also fair to say an assessment as to it security provenance would have paid significant dividends. For the gangs we mean, not general society.

But we also know a few publicly listed companies with apps critical to their operations that are just about as secure; they don’t know who wrote them or who approved them or when.

So we guess Mark Twain wasn’t just talking about the mob.

'Heavy blow' for criminals as more than 200 underworld figures charged after app sting More than 200 members of Australia's mafia and bikie underworld have been arrested in the nation's biggest-ever crime sting, police say.
