Where electronic fails come to live again

When innovation lead the way in the late 1990s Bang & Olufsen released this range of players .. using infrared detection to open when you were near the unit

Very cool 😎 08/05/2025

Yet another local tech has retired .. no time to scratch myself let alone time to post interesting content lately but doing my best to not to lose it in the process.

Ya gotta have fun with it regardless ... riiight ?

Manufacturers don’t want you to know part numbers and their prices as it would destroy their business model of then being able to charge what ever they want so end users are solely reliant on them.

This was the main reason went into electronic repairs .. this is the purpose of a repairer .. their mission

To REPAIR electronics rather than hold users at ransom for gear they have purchased.

The β€œright to repair” is real and companies need to rethink their business models .. thinking the user will be none the wiser.

$6,000 for the manufacturer to replace with a refurbished unit .. or less than 5% of that to repair it.

I don't care whether your device is $30K or $300 .. You receive the same tenacity on me finding the part .. yes, it will take longer .. sometimes months.

I will deplete all possibilities before deeming a device uneconomical to repair. My time has a value as well .. it's not free .. but I am committed to supporting the user.

Most parts come from China - todays deliveries for repairs from before Christmas. Courier fees alone can be $24USD for each order.

Cancelling / Ghosting / Negativity
This forces the price up and ALSO makes you look foolish if you're one of the below.

I do too many repairs for the muso community to worry about the negative ones .. I also have to be choosy who I commit my time to as I know I won't get the same respect in return.

Not paying for a diagnosis / leaving unwanted gear / not replying to messages / justifying time and cost says more about you than it does about myself.

------------------

I used to think communication was the defining principle of business. This thought process has changed and I now realise COMPREHENSION is the defining principle.

Sometimes ya just have to SPELL IT OUT when they don't understand. Listening does NOT equate to COMPREHENSION

"Full up with no space" means that something is completely filled to capacity, leaving absolutely no room for anything else to be added - it's essentially completely packed and cannot hold any more.

"The parking lot was full up with no space for another car to park"
"My hard drive is full up with no space, I need to delete some files to make room for new ones."

The number of repairs requested on a daily basis is ever increasing and there's only ONE of me so I do my best to make sure all have the same amount of attention.

The most common these days is "do you have a status update on my repair"

Repair arrives.
Diagnosed within 1-3 days.
Supplier contacted for price and availability of parts.
Depending on supplier, this can take weeks.

If supplier only has complete PCB, source individual components from China suppliers.
Wait for China supplier to confirm availability of part AND that their manufacturer will deliver to Australia
Wait for MANUFACTURER to reply to Supplier .. so supplier can THEN advise me of delivery.

Components are made by the 10s of thousands at a time .. sometimes 100s
Part may or may not be in production from manufacturer .. as a result can have a lead time of months before available.

Part may or may not be sent express or ship

YOU WAIT FOR THE PART!
I ADVISE YOU WHEN IT ARRIVES / TESTED / FITTED
YOU THEN PROMPTLY PICK THE ITEM UP

This procedure above ensures no-one is waiting to bring their gear in to be serviced.

If you're one of these people, then keep in mind you're hindering your fellow musos in getting their repairs done. ( yes, I repeated myself )
