Hysteroscopy vs laparoscopy: what’s the difference Dr Haider Najjar?

If you’ve been trying to conceive, experiencing abnormal bleeding or have been diagnosed with conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids, you may have heard these terms before.

💫 A hysteroscopy uses a small camera passed through the cervix to look inside the uterus. It can help diagnose and treat issues within the uterine cavity, including polyps, fibroids and scar tissue that may affect fertility.

💫 A laparoscopy uses a camera inserted through a small incision, usually in the belly button, to examine the outside of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. It is commonly used to diagnose and treat endometriosis, adhesions and some types of fibroids.

Both are minimally invasive fertility procedures and, for many people, involve a short recovery and a return home the same day.

For some people, fertility surgery can improve the chances of conceiving naturally. It can also help create the best possible conditions before IVF or other fertility treatment.

Understanding the root cause is often the first step toward understanding your options 💕

Our clinical director, Dr Scott Pearce, has been caring for fertility patients for more than 20 years 🤯

Over that time, he’s seen how important the science is. It provides the foundation for every decision we make.

What experience adds is something different. It’s the ability to recognise patterns, understand the nuances of each situation and know when a patient may need something different.

For Dr Scott, fertility care is both science and an art. He draws on years of working closely with patients and their individual journey and outcome.

That balance is what continues to make fertility medicine so rewarding. Every person arrives with a different story and every conversation offers an opportunity to help someone gain a clearer picture of where they stand and what may come next.

World Infertility Awareness Month is often centred on information like statistics, causes and treatment options. Those conversations matter. They help many understand where things stand and what options may be available.

This month, we want to take the opportunity to acknowledge something else: the very human experience behind it all. You might be surprised by the small things we notice.

We’re recognising the people behind the test results, and the experiences that don’t always make it into the conversation. If any of these moments sound familiar, please know they’re more common than many people realise, and we see you 🫶💕
