Coast Guard Mooloolaba Rescue – Rotary III Answers the Call
Rotary III was tasked this morning to assist a father and son, after their 5.4 metre Haines Hunter suffered engine failure approximately 5 nautical miles offshore from Mooloolaba.
Conditions were atrocious, with rough seas and poor visibility making the search particularly difficult. Heading into the sun's glare, skipper Herb A and 3 crew initially had trouble locating the disabled vessel. Fortunately, the father and son deployed their V-sheet, which made them much easier to spot and enabled the Rotary III crew to quickly identify their position.
Once on scene, the crew established a safe tow and carefully made the return journey through the challenging conditions. The vessel was successfully towed to Outrigger Park, where it was safely retrieved onto its trailer.
The successful outcome was a credit to the professionalism and teamwork of the Rotary III volunteer crew, as well as the Haines Hunter's skipper's preparedness in carrying and correctly deploying a V-sheet when it was needed most.
This rescue is a timely reminder that even a routine day on the water can change quickly. Carrying the correct safety equipment, ensuring your vessel is well maintained and knowing how to use your safety gear can make all the difference when help is on the way.
