⚠️ Bat Safety Alert ⚠️

Due to displacement from Cyclone Narrelle, bats are being found more frequently on the ground and in unusual areas. This increases the risk of pets and people coming into contact with them.

πŸ¦‡ Why this matters:
Bats in Australia can carry Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV) – a virus closely related to rabies that can cause serious and potentially fatal illness if transmitted through a bite or scratch. (Health, Disability and Ageing AU)

🚫 Important reminders:
β€’ Do NOT handle bats – even if they appear injured or dead
β€’ Keep pets well away from bats
β€’ Only trained, vaccinated wildlife carers should manage bats

🐾 If your pet has had contact with a bat:
β€’ Prevent further contact immediately
β€’ Contact your vet urgently for advice

πŸ‘€ If you or someone else is bitten or scratched:
β€’ Wash the wound thoroughly for at least 15 minutes
β€’ Seek urgent medical attention

πŸ’‘ Any bat in Australia should be treated as a potential carrier of ABLV, even if it looks healthy. (NT Health)

πŸ“ž If you find an injured or distressed bat, contact a wildlife rescue group;
Woolleybutt - 0409 941 584
Wildcare - 0408 885 341
Darwin Wildlife Sanctuary - 0473 992 581

Let’s keep both our community and wildlife safe! ❀️
