Last night’s Opening Night of our Senior School Dance Showcase, ‘Unspoken’, was truly spectacular! Our talented students lit up the stage with powerful performances and dynamic choreography, captivating audiences from beginning to end 💃🩰✨

Missed the first performance? Don’t worry – there are still a few tickets left for tonight and tomorrow night!

What cannot be said in words, the body expresses in motion. Every step, turn, and leap reveals what words cannot. ‘Unspoken’ is a celebration of the stories we carry – the emotions, memories, and experiences that live deep within us, waiting to be expressed through rhythm, gesture, and breath. This showcase invites you on a journey through pieces that speak not with dialogue, but with feeling. From joy to grief, strength to vulnerability, each performance offers a glimpse into the inner world of the dancer, where movement becomes language, and the stage becomes a space of raw, unfiltered truth.

What began as a National Boarding Week fundraiser became one of the most powerful displays of community spirit in recent PLC history.

The PLC community raised an extraordinary $52,700 for Farmers Across Borders, more than doubling the College’s original fundraising goal and helping provide vital hay deliveries to drought-affected pastoralists across regional Western Australia.

For years, many pastoralists have endured relentless drought, rising fuel and fertiliser costs, and mounting emotional and financial pressures. For some PLC boarding families, these challenges are deeply personal.

One boarding family, the Ryan family, shared the heartbreaking reality of having to destock their station in the Gascoyne due to the ongoing drought. Their story became a powerful reminder that these struggles were not distant issues, but challenges impacting members of the PLC community directly.

PLC Principal Cate Begbie said the College community immediately rallied behind the cause.

“Our initial fundraising goal was $20,000,” Ms Begbie said.

“We thought if we raised that we could help cover the costs of maybe one truck.

“However, it increased to $30,000, then $40,000, before hitting the $50,000 mark.”

Funds were raised through a combination of direct donations and student-led initiatives including dress-up days, raffles, and sausage sizzles.

One Year 6 student, Isobel Gibson, independently created hampers and sold raffle tickets for a gold coin donation, raising almost $1,000 herself.

A generous contribution from a Kojonup farmer also added a truckload of hay valued at approximately $12,000, in addition to the total funds raised by the PLC community.

The impact of the campaign became especially clear during a whole-school assembly, where Farmers Across Borders President Sam Starcevich and committee members accepted a novelty cheque on behalf of the organisation.

Speaking to students and staff, Ms Starcevich shared that station owners often break down in tears when they receive the call telling them hay is on its way.

For families facing years without meaningful rainfall, hay deliveries are not simply a gesture of support, they are essential to keeping livestock alive.

For PLC and the boarding community, the campaign was always about more than fundraising. It was also an opportunity to deepen students’ understanding of the realities facing many regional families.

“We wanted to ensure that National Boarding Week included educating the PLC community around life in rural and remote communities and fundraise for a cause close to our hearts,” Tessa Bignell (Senior Boarder) said.

Principal Cate Begbie echoed this sentiment at the whole school assembly.

“You hear the stories of our regional families, and it is easy to forget that the people who work incredibly hard to put food on our shelves may be experiencing drought and hardship we do not necessarily see in Perth,” she said.

“We want pastoralists in regional WA to know that we see you and we care.”

The funds raised by the PLC community will help deliver hundreds of hay bales to drought-affected regions across WA, providing practical support to pastoralists doing it tough.

Following the overwhelming success of the campaign, PLC hopes to encourage other boarding schools across Perth to join forces in future years to support regional communities on an even larger scale.
