The latest National Arts Participation Survey from Creative Australia has been published and is a must-read for anyone involved in producing, scheduling and promoting arts events.

This survey was conducted in 2022, with the analysis comparing results with the survey completed in 2019. Context is important when considering the results, particularly how the pandemic was impacts arts and cultural events in 2022, and how cost-of-living pressures have evolved in the time since this survey. That being said, the report highlights some interesting trends and changes in how Australians participate in the arts.

Our key takeaways:
🎭 Having fun and being entertained is the main driver for attendance (69%, up from 63%)
🫶 People want to attend more arts and cultural events (49%, up from 42%)
💸 Cost is the biggest barrier: 55% said cost prevents them attending as many events as they'd like, up from 34%
🎫 36% of Australians attended theatre... (comparable to 37% in 2019)
🗓 ...but are opting to attend less frequently (2% of audience attend weekly, down from 4%; 23% attend every couple of months, up from 20%)
〽️ Audiences are seeing fewer shows (average performances are 7.3, down from 8.8)
ℹ️ 6% of Australians creatively participate in theatre (down from 8% in 2019
