Kin Disability Advocacy - empowering and advocating for refugees and immigrants with disability.

Meet David, one of our individual advocates who has been at Kin for the past six months.

In his day-to-day role, David supports clients through regular check-in calls and visits, assists with NDIS plan reviews and helps individuals navigate processes such as Centrelink or pension applications. He manages a diverse caseload of up to 20 clients at a time, ensuring each person receives the support and guidance that they need.

David describes part of his role within the team as being a "sound board" for both his cases and within the team. For clients, he provides a space to talk things through and gain clarity before making decisions. Internally he supports colleagues by sharing perspectives, discussing cases to work collaboratively, ensuring the best support can be given.

Before joining Kin, David worked in a different sector in a management role. Transitioning into advocacy has given him a fresh perspective on the NDIS space and a deeper understanding of the diverse needs within the community.

We're so happy to have you on the team David! 🧡

Youle works on the Community of Practice for Disability Support Workers Project where he works closely with stakeholders and local communities across the Kimberley region to better understand their needs. His role involves building strong relationships and facilitating communication through workshops and community engagement.

A key part of his role involves travelling around remote areas of the Kimberley, which allows him to engage directly with communities and deliver support in a way that is accessible and grounded in the local context.

He was drawn to Kin because of its inclusive and multicultural approach to advocacy and its commitment to supporting diverse communities within the disability sector.

Youle, it is a pleasure to have you on the Kin Team 🧡

We're proud to introduce Milica, one of our individual advocates who has been working at Kin for the past 7 years. Milica plays a vital role in supporting individuals within our communities.

In her day-to-day work, Milica supports people with disabilities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. She works closely with clients to advocate for their rights and helps them navigate the systems and services available to them. A key part of her role is empowering individuals to become more independent and informed about the supports and benefits they're entitled to.

She was drawn to work at Kin because of her passion for individuals to be treated in a fair and inclusive way, and her desire to be a part of a team that advocates for meaningful outcomes in people's lives.

We're so grateful to have you on our team Milica 🧡

The Kin Community of Practice Team recently hosted a Chat & Cheer workshop in Kalgoorlie with guest speaker Gemma Bourne from the Department of Justice.

This session gave our support workers better tools to effectively assist participants who are reintegrating back into the community after time in prison.

A big thank you to Gemma for sharing her knowledge and insights with us. 🧡

We had a Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder workshop in Kalgoorlie, led by Leanne Pearman from the Australian Inclusion Group.

Thank you, Leanne, for sharing your knowledge on the early stages of intervention and for helping raise awareness of FASD. 🧠
