5 min sketch of the incredible Goanna sculpture by the Tjanpi Desert Weavers. It’s good to challenge yourself with textures and forms outside of your comfort zone. As a ceramicists I’m very comfortable with highly reflective and symmetrical forms. The woven yarns over stuffed raffia provide a very different challenge.

As a beginner it can be difficult to let go of the need for perfectionism. We often forget to give ourselves the the opportunity to explore and try new things. Working in charcoal brings an inherent texture and imperfection to a piece that can help you develop a sense of form while maintaining a lightness and expressive touch.

Woodcut blocks can produce a wonderfully naive image. Here I’ve been experimenting with different woods and ink types with some simple sardines.

Work in progress from the exploring printing short course. Layered fabrics and papers provide texture, when sealed it will provide grooves for ink to nestle in and for the basis for our prints. Stay tuned for the results next week.
