How is GFRP sustainable?

The damaging environmental impacts of traditional steel rebar are well known. Steel takes a large volume of materials to manufacture, and leaves a larger carbon footprint. By comparison, GFRP is a sustainable building material alternative. It requires significantly less energy in production, producing 43% less CO2 emissions, both at production stage and during transport and installation.

It’s also highly durable, meaning it can be used in structures with a longer lifetime, requiring fewer materials to be manufactured and used in repairs and rebuilds. Where steel reinforcement corrosion can cause cracks to appear within 5-15 years, tests of GFRP have shown that it can last twice the life of steel rebar, increasing the structural integrity and concrete strength from 50 years to 100 years (ISO 14025).
