LIKE EVERYTHING WITH RATS, THIS COMES WITH A CAVEAT

Rats are just a part of suburban life now. Too many good places to hide and to forage.

But that doesn’t mean you should lose your fruit and berry harvests to these little four legged critters. You want your garden to become the highway to other food sources and not the buffet itself!

I conducted this experiment and really had great success with it. These plastic bottles saved my orange tree harvest this autumn.

But I do want to be transparent that I do have a dog that also chases them away. Doesn’t catch them, just makes it unattractive to be in my garden. And I do think that helps a lot too.

Stopping rats is one of the questions I get asked the most, so I hope this trick helps you protect the fruit that you have too.

It also helps to make sure you are:
🌱 Harvesting things from your garden just a few days before they ripen. Let them become fully ripe indoors.
🌱 Picking up any fallen fruit from the ground quickly
🌱 If you live in suburbia, only using fully enclosed compost and worm farms. Use open bottomed compost bins for leaf mould piles only.

EVERY TREE AND GARDEN IS DIFFERENT…

But when it comes to lemon trees that are around 3+ years old, you should be able to count on a consistent supply of fruit each season.

If you’re not getting any fruit on your tree, it’s time to get in there and help it out! ⛑️

These are just 3 of the ways that have helped me increase fruit production on my lemon trees 🌳

Some of the other factors to consider are the position of the tree (full sun) and pollination (you need bees in your garden to get that job done!) 🐝

There is also another trick to fertilising that helps prevent flower or fruit drop in fruit trees. I’ll be sharing it in my newsletter on Monday, so if you’d like to receive a copy, comment NEWS below and I will send you a link to subscribe!

IF YOU’RE A BERRY LOVER, THIS IS THE INFO FOR YOU!

I LOVE berries. There is a point each year, when I have run out of last season’s fruit, and I start visiting my berry vines and bushes daily, begging them to hurry up and grow!

As a small space gardener, I don’t have big areas that I can give up to blackberry and loganberry vines, but I can grow plenty of other berries in pots 🪴

These are the berries that I would recommend prioritising in a small space garden, simply because they will provide you with the most fruit, even in a pot.

Stay tuned in the coming weeks too, as we talk berry care and maintenance over winter! ❄️
