The Sierra Gorda joint venture in Chile has approved the fourth grinding line project, which is expected to increase copper equivalent production by around 30% and reduce average operating unit costs by around 10%.

The approval follows completion of a feasibility study which confirmed the potential for attractive returns from this brownfield plant expansion.

The project is expected to increase Sierra Gorda's processing capacity from approximately 48Mtpa to approximately 60Mtpa (100% basis) through the installation of a fourth grinding line, expanded crushing and flotation capacity, and associated process infrastructure.

The project is expected to achieve first production in mid FY30, with full production rates in FY31.

Over the past three years, South32 Hillside Aluminium has helped rebuild much of Ongoye Secondary School in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

From removing asbestos roofing, refurbishing 46 toilet facilities, renovating 15 classrooms, to fitting out a library and a fully equipped Consumer Studies kitchen.

Recently, Hillside Aluminium employees joined year 12 students for a hands-on cooking class and conversations about life after school.
