Soul Sonic Academy

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

From humble beginnings Soul Sonic Academy launched as solo initiative ‘Benny B. Jammin’s Beatboxing Workshops in 2015 by Ben ‘BenJi’ Weirheim to entertain and expand young hearts and minds across his hometown of Perth in Western Australia. Private kids parties and occasionally bustin’ beats and rappin’ rhymes at community-based youth events soon morphed into something greater.

In 2016 BenJi’s workshop was transforming into something greater and he was facilitating for a gradually increasing amount of local governments, youth centres and youth programs around Perth metropolitan area. Maintaining a community ethos, workshops commenced for with various community organisations to keep his workshops accessible to young people of all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. This soon saw him tour regional south-west WA with an Aboriginal wellbeing organisation and facilitate a short ongoing program for NADOC week.

2017 saw the first partnership with a national vacation care provider for a workshop tour across Melbourne, Victoria. This called for an ‘upsizing’ with Soul Sonic Academy (SSA) being born. After taking on two young facilitators, 37 workshops in 3-weeks and a further 41 workshops for a subsequent tour was achieved with great success and hundreds of inspired young minds. 2018 saw SSA continuing to work with more local and regional shire councils and youth organisations, leading to a two-week tour in early 2019 of mining towns in regional North-Western Australia for National Youth Week.

To the present day, SSA has now teamed up with Australia’s largest out-of-school and vacation care provider, with a big summer school holiday program lineup across five Australian capital cities. As a result, SSA is very proud to have two awesomely talented female and two male facilitators across Melbourne, [Rad]Adelaide, Gold Coast/Brisbane and Sydney and including BenJi in Perth (and wherever else might pop up!).
