Lani Beattie, 23, has been convicted over a sustained attack on a staffy-kelpie cross, Roxy, in October last year after the dog allegedly damaged her belongings.

Court findings state Beattie repeatedly pulled on a rope around the dog’s neck with force on multiple occasions, lifting her off the ground and slamming her down, causing her to yelp, choke, gurgle, and make dry heaving sounds.

She then struck Roxy on seven separate occasions, with the dog again crying out, yelping, and struggling.

Beattie was filmed by a passerby standing over the dog’s “lifeless body” in the backyard of her Beckenham property. The dog had been tied to a pole, with the rope still around her neck.

After the dog attempted to escape, Beattie used a second rope to choke her.

RSPCA WA inspectors seized Roxy on the day of the incident. Veterinary examinations recorded bruising, swelling, bleeding to the right eye, and psychological trauma.

Beattie appeared in Perth Magistrates Court and was handed a 12-month suspended sentence. She was banned from owning or caring for an animals for five years and ordered to pay $1,600 to RSPCA WA.

Roxy has since recovered and been adopted.
