The current weather forecast is for cooler weather next week which is excellent for turf laying and planting but it may also be just right for wintergrass seed to germinate.

If you want to get ahead of wintergrass this season consider putting down a pre emergent herbicide to prevent the w**d seed from germinating.

Wintergrass can pop up and produce seed very fast making it quite a rapid spreading w**d. It loves cold, damp spots and often starts in shaded garden beds so treating both your lawn and garden with Freehand or one of the fertiliser and pre emergent combinations Oxa max and Oxa Pro is often worthwhile at this time. Both are granular and do not require spray equipment.

These pre emergents also control other w**ds too in fact Freehand prevents over 60.

Turf management practices are also important in w**d prevention. Healthy, well fed turf is always a strong defense.
