W.A has a rich history of asbestos mining & asbestos-product manufacturing. The heat & moisture resistant properties of asbestos, made for cheap & durable building products. It was commonly used in construction materials between the 1950s & late 1980s, before being banned in the early 2000s. Given the health risk of asbestos, the safe removal of asbestos-containing materials is a key consideration prior to the commencement of any redevelopment works. In the built environment, this includes undertaking an asbestos survey & engaging a licensed removalist for the works. Often overlooked however, is the potential for asbestos to be present in soils onsite.

Asbestos in soil contamination is generally caused by the importation of asbestos-contaminated soils, or from poor demolition practices. Together with the loose sandy soils throughout Perth Metro area, this contamination can often be widespread & pose significant project impacts; time delays, costs as well as public perception risks for stakeholders. As such, it is critical to gain an understanding of the potential for asbestos in soils in the due diligence or planning stages of property redevelopment.

Our Contaminated Land team is led by Rory MacLeod & Darcy Boyd who are happy to assist you to help you get the best result.
