Lately, Iโ€™ve had more and more parents come to me worriedโ€”about their childโ€™s sudden refusal to go to school, lack of interest in learning, short temper, or frequent emotional meltdowns. The common thread?

โ€œMy child doesnโ€™t want to go to school.โ€
โ€œHe gets angry over the smallest things.โ€
โ€œSheโ€™s not interested in learning anymore.โ€
And what keeps coming up in conversation?

It might look like a simple, colourful game on the outside, but underneath, itโ€™s built to be ๐ก๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐š๐ง๐ ๐š๐๐๐ข๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐žโ€”especially for young, developing brains. And we are just starting to understand the toll this can take in the long run.

Roblox (and similar games) constantly feed the dopamine reward loopโ€”fast action, quick wins, instant gratification. This rewires the brain to crave stimulation now, reducing patience, persistence, and focus. ๐Ÿ“‰

โ€ข Attention span (trouble focusing in class)
โ€ข Impulse control (outbursts, frustration)
โ€ข Motivation (real-life tasks feel โ€œboringโ€)
โ€ข Sleep quality (especially when used before bed)

When kids spend hours in these high-stim environments, their emotional regulation is challenged. Theyโ€™re more likely to:
* Struggle with managing disappointment or boredom
* Experience more meltdowns or anxiet
* Avoid social or school challenges because they feel โ€œtoo hardโ€

Left unchecked, this can contribute to:
โ€ข School refusal
โ€ข Poor self-esteem
โ€ข Emotional withdrawal
โ€ข Increased risk of anxiety and depressive symptoms in the teen years

This isnโ€™t about blameโ€”itโ€™s about balance and awareness. Here are some gentle steps:
1. Set healthy boundaries around gaming time (with empathy, not shame) and the game you choose are appropriate.

2. Invite calm activities before and after Roblox (drawing, puzzles, books)

3. Check in with your child emotionallyโ€”often, gaming is a way to escape feelings they donโ€™t yet know how to manage

4. Model and teach self-regulation, deep breathing, and patience

5. Rebuild curiosity through hands-on, screen-free experiences

Even 10 minutes of calm connection a day can shift a childโ€™s world.

Letโ€™s create space where our kids can feel safe, seen, and steadyโ€”online and off.
