Why is a participant's behaviour skyrocketing when their routine is disrupted?

In this Episode 1 highlight of Outreach, co-host and producer Brian sits down with Quality Assurance Manager and Psychologist at National Positive Behaviour Support, Colby bryce. Together, they break down how challenging behaviour is deeply connected to communication, and why risk of harm actions are often direct responses to unmet needs.

Brian shares a real-life example of a non-verbal participant living in Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). When she missed her regular Friday swim, her behaviours escalated significantly. Once the team realised the missed swim was the root cause and took her to the pool, her frustration completely deescalated. It is a powerful reminder to listen closely to actions when words are not available.

Why are mental health illnesses increasing across the world?

In this clip from Episode 1 of The Outreach Podcast, Colby from NPBS points out that, while technology and devices often get the blame for rising global mental health struggles, Colby our diets have drastically shifted over the last 20 years toward heavily processed foods.

For people living with disabilities, this gap in nutritional care is even more pronounced. Colby argues that while therapies like OT and behaviour support are widely utilised, nutrition is significantly overlooked, despite its massive impact on how we feel, sleep, and behave.
