Peak body for local government in Victoria

09/12/2022

Climate change is one of the defining issues of our time.

As all levels of government try to find ways to rapidly decarbonise and adapt to our changing climate, there is increasing recognition that the built environment, along with land use planning, is one of the significant, and relatively ‘easy’, opportunities to reduce emissions.

It is also a critically important component of our transition to a climate resilient future.

That's why we've joined forced with Planning Institute of Australia Planning Institute of Australia, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects - AILA and The Australian Institute of Architects for a joint statement calling on Victoria's new parliament to deliver the policy, regulation and incentives needed to drive climate responsive decisions in the planning system.

Active Leadership for Active Transport online forum

Increasing opportunities for active transport is a priority for the MAV and many Victorian councils. We've partnered with LGiU Australia and SGS Economics and Planning to run a leadership development opportunity for councillors and council officers.

Join our live Q&A event, 12-1pm, 1 September 2022 to discuss how to lead change at local and state levels and create more connected cities and neighbourhoods that prioritise walking and cycling.

The MAV’s Deputy President (metro) Cr Rohan Leppert joins a panel including Sara Stace, Director of Cities at WSP and Kiersten Fishburn, Deputy Secretary, Cities and Active Transport at Transport for NSW. The panel will be facilitated by Jeremy Gill, Principal & Partner at SGS Economics and Planning.

Social and affordable housing is one of the critical issues facing governments at all levels and councils across the state are determined to ensure that everyone in Victoria has a place to live in a supportive local community.

Last night, alongside Community Housing Industry Association Victoria, the MAV was thrilled to host Minister Richard Wynne MP as we launched resources to help councils develop social and affordable housing.

MAV's Rosemary Hancock spoke about the importance of the resources and what we hoped they help achieve, while City of Kingston Mayor Cr Steve Staikos - Bunjil Ward - City of Kingston gave a wonderful insight into Local Government's experience on the ground, and our need to speak as one on such an important issue.

And that's a wrap!

We've enjoyed a wonderfully informative two days in Torquay and online during our Rural and Regional Planning Conference.

A massive shout out to all of our attendees and speakers for helping create such a worthwhile event!

A few pics from a fantastic first day of our Rural and Regional Planning Conference in Torquay and online.

We're thrilled to be offering the hybrid model so attendees can log in from anywhere, but have to admit it was great to have so many planners, councillors and experts gathered in person after a two-year hiatus!
